BG3 Custom Character Names: Find a Name for Your Tav
For your next custom character, choose a name that sounds natural when someone greets them. Then decide what the name says about their past.
Name the person before the character build
If you are looking for a name for your Tav, start with one ordinary detail: a home, a family craft or a name they chose for themselves. That gives you more to roleplay than a name built only around a combat ability.
Cora Fenwick might keep a familiar family name while traveling. Kelda Copperhand might carry a name linked to a craft. Solace might be a name chosen after a change in direction. These are optional story ideas, not statements about official lore.
Compare the five naming palettes
This generator offers human-inspired, elf-inspired, dwarf-inspired, tiefling-inspired and halfling-inspired word banks. The labels describe the creative sound of these lists. They do not claim to cover every playable ancestry or to reproduce official naming traditions.
Human-inspired names are compact. Elf-inspired names use longer vowels and flowing syllables. Dwarf-inspired bynames use craft and stone imagery. The tiefling-inspired list mixes invented names with virtue words. Halfling-inspired bynames draw on small places and household details. Try more than one if your character crosses those boundaries.
Let a class suggest a mood without becoming a rule
For a bard, test whether the name is easy to announce. For a rogue, an ordinary cover name can be useful. For a paladin, an inherited name or a chosen virtue can suggest an obligation. These are writing choices, not requirements.
Try Ilyra Dewsong for a flowing introduction and Cora Fenwick for a more everyday one. Reverse the expected roles if the contrast interests you. A dramatic character with a plain name can be just as memorable as one with an elaborate title.
Use a short spoken name and a fuller written name
Read the result in “My name is…”, “I need your help, …” and “That was …’s idea.” If the words trip you up, shorten the given name or leave the surname on the character sheet. You do not need unusual spelling to make a character distinct.
Use the presets to start a shortlist, then change the format or limit as needed. The tool works for your own character ideas; it does not generate an official companion, check lore or verify the rules of the name field in your installed game.
